100 years of FES – find out more

Ethiopia

Ethiopia was long regarded as a stable, capable and development-orientated state in the Horn of Africa. The country also played an important geostrategic role in the Horn of Africa and as a security partner of the West in the fight against terrorism. Ethiopia is now increasingly a source of insecurity in the Horn of Africa. Wars in Tigray and the Amhara region, serious human rights violations and numerous political conflicts in other parts of the country and with neighbouring states such as Somalia and Eritrea are contributing to this unstable situation. There are internal attempts at reconciliation with the National Dialogue Project. However, regional dialogue and the public exchange of views with neighbouring countries should also be intensified.

Against this backdrop, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) is committed to open, inclusive dialogue and respect for civil rights and freedoms in Ethiopia. Together with its partners from civil society, FES is committed to a socially just economic policy, workers' rights, the strengthening of trade union and women's rights representation and regional dialogue and promotes dialogue and cooperation in the Horn of Africa. The FES office in Addis Ababa was opened in 1992 and expanded more than 10 years ago to include an office for co-operation with the African Union. Addis is also home to the FES African Migration Policy Centre.
