100 years of FES – find out more

Rwanda

Rwanda's political system and the country's politics are still strongly influenced by the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi and its effects. The goals of a consensus-oriented social order are inherent in the state structure. Rwanda is one of the fastest growing economies in Africa, but also faces a number of challenges that need to be addressed. These include poverty, especially in rural areas, high population density and land scarcity, the effects of climate change and the great need for jobs for an increasingly young society.

FES began its work in Rwanda in 2017 after signing an agreement with the Rwandan government, represented by the Ministry of Local Administration MINALOC. Since then, FES Rwanda has been working and partnering with civil society organizations, trade unions, trade union movements, researchers, government institutions, think tanks and local and international organizations based in Rwanda. Its work focuses on social protection and good governance, gender equality and feminism, climate policy, youth work and the promotion of social dialog and workers' rights.
