Here to stay

Stories of arriving in Germany.

When more than 800,000 refugees came to Germany in 2015, they embodied what people skeptical about integration feared most: young men from Syria or Afghanistan, from Somalia, Eritrea, or Iraq coming to Germany alone . People projected both their genuine concerns and their crude racism onto them.

At the same time, people talked about them much more than with them—and that is the starting point of this film. Seven young men talk about arriving and getting settled in Germany—about funny and joyous moments as well as moments of deepest despair, about their fears and how they dealt with them, about racism, and about love. Viewers can share the emotional turbulence that fleeing from home almost always involves, and the stories explain vividly what we still need in the coming years for integration to succeed.
