Darum ging es beim Tag der Progressiven Wirtschaftspolitik

Weltweit trübt sich die Stimmung hinsichtlich der konjunkturellen Lagen zunehmend ein. Außenwirtschaftliche Unsicherheiten bestimmen das Tagesgeschehen. Der Brexit sowie der Handelskonflikt zwischen China und den USA stellen die Wirtschaft in Deutschland und Europa aktuell vor enorme Herausforderungen. In Deutschland geht man bereits fest davon aus, dass die fetten Jahre vorbei sind. Die Konjunktur schwächelt, und eine rasche wirtschaftliche Stabilisierung scheint angesichts einer nur begrenzt handlungsfähigen Geldpolitik und einer Fiskalpolitik, der durch Schuldenbremse und EU-Fiskalregeln enge Grenzen gesetzt sind, schwieriger denn je.

Around the world, the mood regarding the economic situation is worsening. Uncertainties over foreign trade dominate the news. Both Brexit and the trade dispute between China and the US pose enormous challenges to the German and European economy. In Germany, it is already assumed that the boom years are over. Growth is slowing and quick economic stabilisation appears to be more difficult than ever in view of a monetary policy with limited scope for action and a fiscal policy which has strict limits thanks to the debt ceiling and EU fiscal rules.

But not only the current economic situation offers ample reason for heated debates on economic policy. The economists in Germany and Europe face long-term structural challenges: globalisation, climate change, digitalisation, migration, demographic change, increasing income and wealth inequality, substantial underinvestment in public infrastructure and affordable housing, the stabilisation of the euro zone as well as socio-economic divergence within the EU demand new, innovative answers from economic policymakers.

These and many other economic, ecological, fiscal and social challenges as well as progressive policy approaches were discussed at the Day of Progressive Economy Policy with experts from Germany and abroad and with more than 600 conference participants.
